Alternator Repairs

Belt Drive
Most alternators are belt driven from the engine and require minimal maintenance other than changing the drive belt at the appropriate service interval
Alternator Repairs
Alternators generate an alternating curent (AC) rather than the direct current (DC) used by automotive electrical systems; in order to convert AC to DC an array of diodes and rectifiers take the negative part of the voltge and invert it: A voltage regulator then maintains the 13 to 15 Volt power ouput needed to charge the battery nd run the autoelectrical systems
Car Won't Start
Most ignition problems are caused by battery failure or poor connection: Other causes include starter motor,fuse or relay failure
Power Train Control Module (PCM) & Electronic Control Unit
The engine management system will take control of regulating the output voltage from the alternator by switching the field current on and off with millisecond precision
Battery Warning Light
Once your car has been started; if the battery warning light remains on then there could be a problem with the alternator-charging system or the battery itself
Starter Motor
When the ignition system is initiated; an electrical signal switches a relay-solenoid to send power to the starter motor - The starter motor then engages the drive gear to turn and start your engine
Relays
Relays are electric switches that typically use a small current or voltage in one circuit to close a switch that allows a much larger current to flow in a second circuit

Engine Won't Turn Over

When parts of the electrical system fail then often the problem can be traced to a blown fuse or relay

Corroded joints can lead to connection problems and may be caused by water ingress or a mechanically loose joint sparking and oxidising
